Arsenal want to be a team ‘that is feared’

VIVIANNE Miedema scored her second successive hat-trick on Sunday as Arsenal ran out 9-0 winners over Lewes Women in the Continental Tyres Cup.

The Dutch striker, who also scored three in the Gunners’ recent 5-0 FA Women’s Super League victory over Liverpool, had to share the limelight this time, however, as midfielder Kim Little also chipped in with a terrific treble.

Arsenal made a flying start at the Dripping Pan Stadium in East Sussex, with Danielle van de Donk opening the scoring after just six minutes. The midfielder found the back of the net with a composed finish from close range following some fine footwork from Little on the left wing.

Miedema and Little chalked up two goals each in the first half before going to complete their hat-tricks after the break. Forwards Lisa Evans and Katie McCabe also scored in the rout.

Reflecting on Miedema scoring back-to-back hat-tricks, and Little netting in her fourth game on the spin, Gunners’ boss Joe Montemurro said: “They’re two world- class players and two players that we’re very privileged to have at Arsenal. Their great work during pre-season is now starting to show.”

Quizzed on Arsenal’s impressive start to the season, Montemurro added: “We want to make sure that we’re the team that’s feared and we’re going into every game knowing that we’re going to play a good brand of football, but also make sure that we come away playing the Arsenal style.”
