Ian Nairn was a great writer and a kind man

• DEAR Diary Editor, I’m writing to thank you for your stories about Ian Nairn in the July 31 edition, (Flesh and loan: downfall of a pornographic prose pioneer).
I knew him when both of us worked for The Observer newspaper in the 1970s.
As well as being a great writer with a very particular point of view about architecture he was a very kind man and helped to get me out of the typist’s chair and into the National Union of Journalists when everybody else was trying to keep me down.
Your piece brought back memories of lots of laughter in the dilapidated pubs he loved so much.
Thank you so much.
