Westminster Council have been urged to support private renters
LABOUR has called for Westminster Council to sign up to the “London Living Rent” in a bid to support private renters.
The initiative, launched originally by the Mayor of London, aims to ensure some homes are available for rent at a third of average local household income. As part of a five-point plan for a fairer deal for “Generation Rent”, the West End Labour group also want to name and shame rogue landlords who don’t provide a quality service for tenants, while celebrating those who do a good job.
Pancho Lewis, of the West End Labour team, said: “More than 40 per cent of residents rent, and the average tenant pays nearly half of their income in rent.” The plan aims to support private renters and calls for the creation of a not-for-profit lettings agency and protection for renters from revenge evictions.
