Parents launch anti-knife crime group

Calls for parents to get together to stop rise in stabbings

26 May, 2017 — By Alina Polianskaya

A COMMUNITY group aiming to tackle knife crime in north Westminster is holding its first meeting on Saturday June 3.

Mothers Angel Samuel and Ajok Athian decided to form the group after a surge in youth violence that they feared would lead to the loss of more lives.

Young people and parents will make speeches at the event between 11am and 6pm at the WECH Community Centre, in Athens Gardens, W9.

Ms Samuel, who lives in Bayswater and works around Harrow Road, said: “The event is a calling for our community to stand together in solidarity to tackle knife and weapon crime. Together we can make a difference, together we can save lives.”

She added: “Our youth are the future of this country. We all have a responsibility to ensure our youth are able to live out the best years of their lives safely and without constant fear.

“The significance of current knife crime statistics and its effect on our youth dictate that we must work together – professionals, businesses, parents children and the government – if we are to successfully eradicate or reduce the statistics of this crime wave.”

There will be speeches, a range of activities, and an exhibition and the parents are hoping some sports companies will back the project.
