There’s something about mayor-y…

RUFFS at the ready! The new Lord Mayor of Westminster donned the blue robes on Wednesday in the annual night of council pomp. The borough’s new first citizen, Councillor Ian Adams, tried his best to bring it up to date with two young DJs from the City of Westminster College (CWC) spinning the latest dance hits at the Porchester Hall after party.

As champagne flowed, tongues loosened and all manner of gossip was exchanged – which ward councillors don’t really like each other… which aren’t so sure about their allegiance to a party – little was off the table.
During the more formal part of the evening the new Lord Mayor announced his two chosen charities – Age UK Westminster, of which he is the deputy chairman, and the Social Mobility Foundation. He also planned a project with CWC for photography students to capture the “mayoral year”, starting with the ceremony on Wednesday night.
He paid tribute to his married partner Chris: “It is our 25th year together and it is also my 15th year on the council, so I think there is some planetary alignment.”
He told Diary: “For me the most exciting thing is working with both older and younger people across Westminster. On the younger front, looking to support people from deprived households, getting them into college and university with the support from the Social Mobility Foundation.”

The Labour Party had nominated Paul Dimoldenberg, who they knew was unlikely to be selected because of the heavy Tory majority.
Cllr Guthrie McKie, who seconded the nomination, described him as “a terrier”, “a maverick” and a “fighter”, adding “I would suggest that Paul Dimoldenberg is the best known councillor name in this city.”
