Sara Barros’s plan for the dress
WHAT’S black and white and read all over? A dress designed by a sixth former who decided to use copies of the New Journal as her chosen material.
Sara Barros, 18, came up with the garment made up of your favourite local newspaper as part of her art and design course at Acland Burghley Secondary School. “I want to go into fashion in the future so I made a dress out of cardboard and paper to show that recycling materials can make just about anything – even a dress,” said Sara.
She said she was inspired by fashion designer Hussein Chalayan, who went to nearby Highgate School. “I wanted to do something different,” she added. “I picked up the Camden New Journal from just around the corner from school. Camden is where I go to school and where I made the dress. Camden is where the dress comes from so using the CNJ felt right.”
Art teacher Gwendoline Frye said: “She will be applying for a fashion course for when she finishes school. I wish her all the best.”
